Another nice video, Ryan! Was glad to see UC included in the list of suppliers. I use them often. You mentioned it being run by Tony and Joe Caparatta, but you didn't mention Scott Fellman. A lengthy conversation with Scott is what sold me on UC, and their quality items made them #1 in my go-to list. I love the low S&H, too! Just wanted to give Scott his props and thank you guys for another interesting and informative video!!!

+BulkReefSupplyCom I wasn't aware of that... thanks for the update! Amazing customer service and they certainly aim to please!!!

+BulkReefSupplyCom I completely understand, I am just one person too and recording and editing videos is quite a lot of work. One tip that might have worked for you and maybe for other videos is to first do all of the corals from one company and then from another etc so that you don't mix them. It looked kind of better in my opinion to mix the order up (as to not give any preference to any company) but it is definitely more work. Keep it up guys, I always learn something new from you.

I noticed the pulsing only occurs when it’s obvious that there is t much ware movement in the immediate area. Leading me to believe that the pulsing is the Xenia creating its own water movement.

Best in the series so far. I've found understanding the livestock options the hardest part of the hobby. The range is so large and the books seem disconnected to the current state of the hobby. I suspect because it changes so quickly. Trouble is that on any days the LFS or even online stores has such a small subset of what is currently the stock rotating through the industry. You ask about other options and get given a heap of names that don't mean anything to you (or are confusing - so what type of montipora is that "Superman"?). So you don't know if you should buy that coral in front of you or wait and see what else might show up in the next 6 months... It's great to get a such a good overview which goes into some detail too. This vid saved many hours of hanging out in the LFS interrogating busy staff. Can I suggest a BRS cheat sheet on each of the coral types. Especially listing the commonly available named clones currently trendy would be fantastic. Now if you blokes would just ship to Oz. And talking of Oz I'd like to plug our local Cairns Marine. Maybe your LFS in the US might like some sustainably caught Australian corals. Thanks again for the vid.

I lived in Tampa for a few years and they have some decent local shops. However after recently moving closer to the Orlando area I took a drive over to WWC and can honestly say they are as awesome as advertised. I have not purchased any corals online I prefer to actually see what I am getting with my own two eyes but after visiting WWC in person I would not hesitate at all from buying something from them online. If you are making a trip to Orlando you should definitely check them out and hey Reef-a-Poolza is next month so.

I understand not making a big deal of this for fear of scaring off new reefers. But due to the risk I'm always surprised when no one mentions that zoanthids and palys can contain one of the deadliest toxins in nature. It is impossible to know which do and don't without being a marine biologist with a speciality in those corals.
Not trying to knock BRS at all. Just surprised it wasn't mentioned. I love BRS and I'm glad I have the luck that I live only a mile away. (*cough* Hire me as an IT guy *cough*)
The main reason I point it out is simply due to trying to keep others safe. Just in the local club here in the twin cities. One of the members almost went blind in one eye last year because he forgot to wash his hands after moving some zoas around and rubbed his eye. It can be scary stuff, these animals evolved to protect themselves. Wear gloves and wash your hands.
Now to stop being the harbinger of doom. Another great video. I have a few more to catch up on after being on vacation.

Dear Ryan, days ago I came across a Craigslist post about a guy who was selling high end coral frags at affordable prices in his apartment. He doesn't has an aquaria store. Yesterday I went to visit him and I bought a few nice frags including one called "Armor of God" (Palythoa). The guy just fragged the corals at that moment but he didn't mount them on plugs, so they were swimming lose in the container (I guess that's why they were cheaper).
Today I'm reading that Palythoa coral is poisonous. He fragged his Palythoa colony with a razor blade, no glasses and no gloves for protection. If that guy is an experienced reefer (he got 5 mature reef aquariums) I'm wondering why he didn't take any precaution... If Palythoa coral is severely toxic why nothing happened to us?? Arriving home I mounted all the frag on plugs with glue. I was handling the frags bare hand. Now I'm seriously concerned after reading this. What do you think about it?? Thank you.

Regarding online vendors, I’ve been surprised at how expensive fish and coral seem to be online compared to local stores. I’d expect local stores to cost more given both the supplier and the store need to profit, plus I’d pay a premium to see it in store and get to ask questions. Any thoughts on why this is? And I’m even talking about before shipping.

I've been in this hobby for a year now and recently discovered this channel. More than anything, I appreciate the efficiency of these videos. Plain language, well written, information dense. I binge watch BRSTV like it's Netflix. Maybe I'll get myself a tub of chocolate ice cream.
In fact no. It’s not like I haven’t spent the past days, weeks, months planning a new rig. I have I have and it’s all coming to a head right now. This is Atlanta. People here feel so marginalized they amass on the freeway and I can’t bring myself to care about any of it. A rimless low-iron aquarium sits on my table, you see. Still in the stretch-wrap. Packing peanuts on the carpet. So I say no. Not chocolate. Rather something with peanut butter cups mixed in.
I have a diamond hole saw and I am not afraid to use it. Thank you, for that BRS.

My boyfriend and I have been running our reef tank for over a month. There is live rock, live sand, clean up crew, and 3 pajama cardinals. We have a 40 gallon long (about 3 ft long and 18 inches high) No coral is in the tank yet but we already have a 75 Fowlr tank so this 40 we want as a reef. Totally a beginner reefer and have a lot of questions. We have one kessil A150 blue. I'm wondering if we can have a few soft corals with just one kessil or do you really need 2? If so, what great beginning coral would be good to put in a 40g long with one kessil light and moderate flow. If we need we can get another kessil next year as $400 for another kessil needs to wait. Let me know what we can put in now with what we have

At about the 4:30 mark, you mention that it is unnecessary to dose a softy tank. Does this mean you won't need kalkwasser until you jump to LPS?

I've always wanted to venture into the saltwater/reef hobby, but when I go to the local saltwater shops I come out with the impression it costs hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. All I want is a small tank set up that I can set on my home office desk, so that I can enjoy and relax while viewing the marine life. Is this a possibility? Maybe 1 clownfish and a live rock?

Hey John, I've been collecting stuff for my reef aquarium since November 2016. Yes it's expensive but there's no rush. There is so much to investigate and information to absorb and I've been having a blast learning everything about this hobby. So if you enjoy the adventure getting there before you know it you will have everything you need to start out just the way you envisioned. The last of all my stuff has arrived today and I'm extremely excited to begin building my reef. BRS TV has become my go to if I need to brush up on anything reefing. Anticipating getting fish in my tank the beginning of May. :D

The reason pulsing xenias pulse is because they are normally found in low flow environments in the wild, so they pulse to create more flow around them. Therefore they may stop pulsing because they have enough flow.

As a noob (about 8 months in now) I’ve had limited success with softies yet my lps and sps were doing fine (until my skeletor moray snapped most off) couldn’t work it out, then realised my nitrates were too low due to nopox

Hi BRS Team. Should a softy+fish tank have the same parameters as you mentioned in another video: Ca=420ppm KH=8.5dKH and Mg=1300ppm? I understand from this video that you shouldn’t need to dose Ca/KH for the softies is that correct? Last one: would you recommend Red Sea Salt or Coral Pro Salt for a softy+fish tank? Thanks in advance, keep up the great work

+chris miller There are different types of xenia, but that one is a "pulsing" xenia. Not all xenia pulse... even pulsing xenia don't always pulse. But if it isn't a pulsing xenia, it'll definitely not pulse. Did I mention xenia too many times? LOL!!!

Can you guys talk about fragging corals in a later week? I am really interested in fragging my corals because they are all starting to grow very large. Unfortunately, I have always been afraid of fragging because I don't quite understand how to do it with 100% certainty that my coral is going to survive.

I need advice. I'm eventually getting a led light but for now I'm using the aqueon t8 light on a 20 gallon long. It's about 11.5 inches from the light source to the base of the tank. I was wondering if I can put corals like the ones from the video like Pom Pom or zoos'. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What is the Acan called to the left at 9:07? I have one of these curious if anyone knows the name. It’s my first Acan.

    • @BRStv

With so many coral vendors putting fancy names on corals these days, it's difficult to definitively say what commercial name each one has. Luckily the care for all Acans is pretty much the same, so regardless of the name they are all relatively the same to care for. :)
